The Half Gaff
Credits For Half Gaff...
- The copper silver gaff can be found as early as 1584 in "Scot's
Discovery of Witchcraft."
- Half Shell appeared in print for the first time in "Pallbearers
Review (June 1973, page 633) as "Gaffed Shell Coin".
-Karl Fulves mentions in the editor's note, previous knowledge of the
gaffed half shell.
-(Folia #5, 1976, page 935) Bob Elliot uses a half shell to show both
sides of a silver coin in the transposition of two coins.
- Sometime in the 70's (Date unknown,) Steve Duscheck adds a shim to
the Gaffed Shell Coin (to make it magnetic). This re-popularizes the
Fulves gaff. Duscheck calls his routine "Copper, silver Transpo".
-Later he reintroduces the half shell in a coin set named 'Slippery Sam'.
-Presley Guitar played with various ideas using the half shell that
were never published but were spread through the underground. Presley
says, "...the half shell is a gaff that predates me!"
-Late 80's Bob Kohler and Robert Cabral figure a way to make the
Fulves gaff lock with another coin by bending the side.
-In late 2000 Lonnie Chevrie suggests the use of Teflon tape to coin
gaffs to silence the nesting of the shell.
-Auke van Dokkum make the insert coin magnetic and put a shim in
the half shell, he shows it for the first time at the TOAM 2004.

Chinese Linking Rings
We also offer that other classic of magic, The Chinese Linking Rings.
Everyone loves watching those solid metal rings that just seem to melt right through each other, linking and unlinking…
The Linking Rings can mesmerize small groups, as well as audiences of hundreds…
Performed either in silence, with a good piece of music, or with a scripted patter, the Rings are one of the few manipulative routines that can compete with the largest stage illusions.
Our Linking Rings are hand-made of hollow brass or stainless steel. They are very light, but can withstand all of the professional stage or street-performer’s demands.
The size we recommend is
± 11 inch (witch was preferred by Dutch Master Magician and twice World Champion, Richard Ross), but you can order every size you want.
E-mail us for specifications and prizes.
You can make your own set by choosing from:
- Single Ring
- Chain of Two
- Chain of Three
- Open Key Ring
- van Dokkum Locking Key
The van Dokkum Locking Key was developed after talking with dozens of professional magicians.
After all, several kinds of locking keys are already offered from different manufacturers.
We are very proud to offer a locking key that can be opened AND closed with one hand only.
It is NOT a magnetic lock and, when handed out, even magicians who knew about this principle, were unable to open it.
The lock is virtually invisible from only two feet away. You can have the cleanest display of Linking Rings ever!
Almost every magician who tried the first sample-models of the Locking Rings, has replaced his old set with van Dokkum’s.
(All of the moves from the original routine of Richard Ross can be done with our Locking Key)
- With these Rings you can amaze your audience, and fool your fellow magicians!

Coingaffs by Auke van Dokkum.
The last years some very talented craftsmen from the US raised the bar for the industrial standard for expanded shells and other gimmicks way up high. We took the challenge to meet these standards. We have been developing ways to improve the manufacturing of coin-gimmicks to a level that is hard to beat.
After much trail and error we have found a superior method where the same technological knowledge used in the manufacturing of our famous cups, is also used to make the best gaffed coins.
Since our products are aimed towards the serious performing magician, we use silver coins exclusively, no clad-silver, unless asked for.
